I noticed you before you even sat down.

It wasn’t anything dramatic – no slow-motion entrance or halo of backlight. Just a girl in a pink sweater, scanning the crowded coffee shop for a place to land. I’d taken the last window table, and the seat across from me was empty. I gestured, reflexively, and you smiled like it cost you nothing.

“Thanks,” you said, setting down your drink. “Full house today.”

Your elbow brushed mine as you slid into the booth. Light, accidental. But I felt it like a static pop, a small spark that didn’t know it had a name yet.

We didn’t talk much, at first. Just sipped and coexisted. But you hummed along softly to a song playing overhead, and when I glanced up, you smiled – like we both knew the lyrics but were pretending not to.
